Essay on Women Empowerment- Women empowerment refers to the creation of an environment for women where they can take decisions for their personal matters as well as for society. With regard to the current situation, the question arises whether women are really strong?

If we talk about women in Indian male-dominated society, even today women are falling behind in many areas of India. There is a need to accelerate women’s empowerment to bring men and women equally. Gender inequality gives rise to many problems which can come as a major obstacle in the development of the nation.

Meaning of Empowerment

Making any person capable and fully qualified so that he can take all the decisions related to his life on his own is called empowerment.

What is women’s empowerment?

Women empowerment can be defined in very simple words that it leads to gender inequality among women and male-dominated society. Women are often suppressed and discriminated against by the family and society for many reasons. Their rights and values ​​are always being ignored in society.  Due to which women are forced to forget their dreams without developing their talent. Some women do not know their rights due to illiteracy and after marriage becomes victims of exploitation of their husband and in-laws for life. Therefore, empowering women will also prevent their exploitation and will also become the basis for the development of the country.

Obstacles in the way of women empowerment

There are many obstacles in the empowerment of women like the dowry system, illiteracy, sexual violence, inequality, domestic violence, human trafficking. Women cannot be empowered without rooting out every such evil prevalent in society. Along with the uneducated class, the educated class is also not untouched by this, a large number of women of the country are suffering from some of these social evils.

Due to the conservative ideology, women in many areas of India do not have the freedom to go out of the house for education or employment. In the last few decades, there has been an increase of about 170% in the harassment of women in the workplace.

They also do not have the freedom to work independently or take decisions related to the family.  Many rural girls do not even pass class X and according to a report by UNICEF in 2018 still around 15 lakhs, girls are married off before the age of 18 in India every year. Due to which she is unable to grow physically and mentally.

Government efforts for women empowerment in India

Continuous efforts are made by the Government of India for women’s empowerment.  There are many schemes for women being run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Government of India.  Some of these schemes like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Women Helpline Scheme, Ujwala Yojana, Mahila Shakti Kendra are reservations for women in Panchayati Raj Scheme, etc.  Along with this, every year 8 March is celebrated as Women’s Day to promote women empowerment.

Conclusion

For women’s empowerment in society, there is a need to change the thinking of the people by removing the bad practices against women. To empower women in India, first of all, it is necessary to kill the thinking that kills their rights in society like the dowry system, illiteracy, sexual violence, inequality, domestic violence against women, and human trafficking.

Gender discrimination brings cultural, social, economic, and educational differences in the nation which push the country backward. Empowering women is one of the most effective measures to ensure the right to equality enshrined in the Constitution of India.
