Introduction

Essay on Swachh Bharat Abhiyan – Swachh Bharat Abhiyan has been started by the government to bring awareness about cleanliness in the country. If we keep our house clean like this, it is not our responsibility to keep our country clean too. Do not throw the garbage here and there and put it in the dustbin.

Mahatma Gandhi said before the independence of India “Cleanliness is more important than freedom”.  He was well aware of the poor condition of India.  He laid great emphasis on people to adopt cleanliness in their life. His statement clearly shows how important cleanliness is for all of us. To fulfill his dream, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was started by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the 145th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on 2 October 2014.

Aim of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

Its main aim is to make India open defecation-free by 2 October 2019 through the construction of at least 12 crore toilets in rural and urban households.  As of 1 February 2019, the government claimed to have constructed 9.2 crore toilets in rural areas.

Facts of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

On the basis of toilet construction, the government declared 28 states and union territories open defecation-free.  But the survey shows that open defecation still continues in some areas which have been declared as defecation-free by the government.

It has also been found that despite having toilets, 23% of people defecate in the open, including those from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, which have been declared open defecation-free states.

Objectives of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan

  • The main objective of this effort is to keep our India clean.

Efforts for the success of the mission

Young children first learn the lesson of cleanliness from the family.  Then go to the schools and teach about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene.  He also understands the damage caused by dirt and garbage. When children understand cleanliness, good values ​​and thoughts are also born in them.  The role of the family is important here that we explain its importance to the children through personal cleanliness.

Priority will have to be given to the village, people will have to be made aware about the management of waste in the village and more and more toilets will have to be constructed.  The Municipal Corporation and Panchayat have a special role in this work. People will get information through broadcasting and discussions through the media.

Conclusion

In its National Annual Rural Sanitation Survey 2017 – 18, the government claimed that 77% of rural households have access to toilets, of which 93.4% are using them regularly.  It was also claimed that 95.6% of the surveyed villages which have been declared as defecation-free were actually open defecation-free.

This campaign, which started on the 145th birth anniversary of Gandhiji, has completed 6 years on 2 October 2020. As the target was to make India completely open defecation-free by 2020. The completion of this goal was not successful, but today the situation has become much better than before.
